Abstract

Despite the big advances in medicine there?s still an alternative way to have preventive and therapeutics answers. The objectives of the study were: identify how mothers use natural resources to resolve their children?s health problems, identify in what diseases they use these alternative ways, identify the origin of these knowledge and practices, and finally, know the confidence in them. The methodology used was an observational and descriptive study in two Primary Health Care Centres. The subjects of studying were seventy-five mothers with children between one and five years assigned in these Primary Health Care Centres. The instrument used was a questionnaire with closed and opened questions. The diseases where mothers use at least one resource are: cold, diarrhoea and constipation. The cures more used were: rice and carrot?s water, nasal washing and ingesting of natural orange juice. The majority of mothers had a middle-high confidence. The family is the origin of this knowledge. The study shows how mothers not only use the medical prescription, they also combine it with traditional therapeutics. It?s necessary to know the resources used in the families to guide our educational actions in the promotion of healthful practices.
