Accidents caused by walking chairs in infancy

Aim: Acknowledge the importance of accidents caused by walking chairs in childhood. Methods: A retrospective descriptive study with an analytical component. Patients admitted to hospital La Fe in Valencia, presenting accidents caused by walker during 1993. Results: Four children were hospitalised because of accident of this nature, which makes the 0,04% of all child admittance, and the 0,4% of accidents involving a child. Annual incidence of 1.2/100,000 children, aged 0-14. All patients were male and 75% under 12 months. All lesions affected the head, one of which with skull fracture. Falls were the cause of all accidents, and stairs were involved in 50% of all patients. Short stay in hospital (max. 64 hours). Radiological study in all cases. No deaths or sequels of any kind. Conclusions: Maximal prevalence in male and in under 12 months of age. Head is the part of the body mostly involved. Falls stand out as external cause and stairs as risk factor. Short stay in hospital. High rate of radiological study. Prevention is essential.
