Abstract

Introduction: the main aim of this study is to investigate the relation between the traits of temperament and character and symptoms of anxiety and depression in the general child population.

Material and methods: Junior Temperament and Character Inventory, Kovacs´s Children Depression Inventory and Spielberger´s State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children were administered to 827 children of between 9 and 13 years, 342 girls and 481 boys.

Results: all the dimensions of temperament and character presented statistically significant correlations with the scores in the questionnaires of anxiety and depression. We found the highest values in harm avoidance and self-directedness, which resulted positive and negative respectively.
