Abstract

Although the most frequent cause of childhood diarrheal processes is infection, in the case of severe and prolonged symptoms in infants, congenital causes such as genetic disorders or immunodeficiencies must be ruled out. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) colitis is a rare cause of chronic diarrhoea in immunocompetent children. In general, it is a mild and self-limiting disease, so the possibility of immunodeficiency should be considered in cases with a more severe course. Performance of an endoscopic examination is recommended in these patients, and antiviral treatment is required in those with more severe forms of disease or with confirmed immunosuppression.
