Abstract

Varicella (chickenpox) has long been considered a beningn and inevitable disease of childhood. The availability and commercialization of a varicella vaccine has increased the interest on epidemilogical studies, community impact of childhood varicella infections and costs of the disease in the normal population. Different authors suggest it shouldn?t be lasta exantematic disease that results inevitable and consider the potential benefits of a childhood varicella vaccine program. This article reviews the epidemiology of varicella, seroprevalence studies after vaccination and the different strategies accepted for vaccination.
