Star anise, a safe medical herb?

Abstract

The `Star anise` (Illicium verum Hooker filius) has been used in childhood because its carminative properties. We review the Spanish situation during last year 2001 with several cases of neurological disorders in babies who were given `star anise` infusions. The Spanish Health Authorities have taken several regulatory actions to avoid the occurrence of new cases. Also the European Commission has taken several measures in order to control the import of this herbal remedy into the European Union. On these situations the Pharmacovigilance is an efficient activity.
