Abstract
Stump appendicitis is a rare entity, characterised by an inflammatory process of the residual appendix after an incomplete appendectomy. The symptoms of this pathology are indistinguishable from those of primary appendicitis. It is vitally important to include it in the differential diagnosis of the patient with right lower abdominal pain and a history of previous appendectomy to avoid associated morbidity and mortality. Ultrasonography and computed tomography are the imaging tests of choice, the last one having greater sensitivity. The treatment of choice is complete appendectomy, either by open surgery or laparoscopically.
