Abstract

Objectives: To know the prevalence of bronchial asthma of children aged between 3 and 14 years old in the population of a Pediatric primary care unit. To know the predictive values of allergic disease of the following parameters: Family and personal history of allergic disease, Total serum IgE, elevated counts of peripheral blood eosinophils and passive smoking. Design: Retropspective and transversal analisys of clinical histories. Target Population: We found 40 children with bronchial asthma. We excluded 9 children. The total Target population aged between 3 and 14 years old was 934 children. Setting: Pediatric Population aged between 3 and 14 years old of a Pediatric Unit of a Health Primary Care Center in Zaragoza city. Mean Results: The prevalence of bronchial asthma was 4,28% and the percentage of allergic children was 77,4%. The mean allergic condition found in this study was the allergic to moulds 70,8%, grammineas pollen 62,5% followed by mammals epithelium 45,8% and Acarus 33,3%. Passive smoking was found in the 51,6% of children. The total serum IgE levels and the count of peripheral blood eosinophils was significatively elevated in the allergic group, family and personal allergic history and passive smokers. The VPP of total serum IgE and high peripheral blood eosinophils blood were respectively: 82,6%, 85,7%, 72,2% and 78,2% and the VPN: 62.,5%, 50%,37,2% and 37,5% respectively. Conclusions: The prevalence of Bronchial asthma is in this target population 4-5% aproxmately. The studies of prevalence of bronchial asthma in this area were simmilar. There were a 77,4% of this childen with allergic disease. Passive smoking was an important problem of public health in this population. Acarus sensitivation was an unussually prevalent condition in this children group. The VPP of Total serum IgE, High peripheral blood count eosinophils ,Family history were moderately good but his respectives VPN were not so good.
