Topical steroids as treatment of child phimosis

Abstract

To evaluate the effectivity of topical steroids treatment, plus periodic protraction, of phimosis in boys. Material and methods: A prospective study, without control group, was performed in 12 patients younger than 14 years of age with phimosis who were attended ambulatorily between January 1999 and March 2000 Results: Resolution of phimosis (understood as the easy retraction of foreskin over glans ) was achieved in 10 cases, that it suppose a 83,3% success rate. Conclusions: Topical steroid treatment plus periodic protraction should be the election treatment for phimosis in pre-pubescent patients. Success rate is high, have low contraindications and few side effects. Moreover, it no contraindicates a posterior surgical treatment in case of a hypothetical treatment failure.
