Abstract

Neglect as a form of violence against children is the most frequent type of maltreatment, but its expressiveness is generally discreet, so its detection should involve an active search. Only 8% of the records of child maltreatment due to neglect come from the healthcare field, probably due to the poor adaptation of the reporting systems to healthcare dynamics, and the poor training of professionals in its correct approach. Pediatricians need a solid training in attachment, parenting skills and risk factors for vulnerability in childhood, to be able to provide the necessary help and support to each child according to their circumstances. The most common professional and institutional factors that hinder their approach are described, and actions are proposed to avoid that children's needs from being inadequately met.
