Abstract

This article offers a theoretical review of the phenomenon of the sexual abuse of minors, especially of those aspects most related to its detection. First, the difficulties for reaching a consensus in its definition are discussed, and one of the most functional typologies of sexual abuse is presented. Moreover some information is given on international epidemiology, which reveals the true dimension of this problem. Finally, some indicators and risk factors are presented, which may help professionals working with children, and especially pediatricians, to detect possible cases of sexual abuse.
