Abstract

Stump appendicitis is a rare disease characterised by inflammation of the residual appendix after an incomplete appendectomy. The symptoms are indistinguishable from those of primary appendicitis. It is vitally important to include it in the differential diagnosis of the patient with pain in the right lower abdomen and a history of appendectomy to prevent the associated morbidity and mortality. Sonography and computed tomography are the imaging tests of choice, with the latter offering a greater sensitivity. The treatment of choice is complete appendectomy, either open or laparoscopic.
