Abstract
There are several reasons why a doctor or nutritionist prescribes, or a person decides to start a certain diet. In recent years the relationship between some foods and certain symptoms, usually digestive, has been proposed. In this review, the characteristics, consequences and effectiveness of the low FODMAPs (polyols, monosaccharides, disaccharides and fermentable oligosaccharides) diet, the gluten-free diet and the low-histamine diet are detailed, mainly in children with chronic abdominal pain. The reasons why a person follows a vegetarian or vegan diet are varied: ecological, ethical, philosophical, spiritual, religious or because they have health benefits, which are attributed to them. The pediatrician must be prepared for the proper planning of the diets chosen by the population they serve, as long as they are adequate.
