Abstract
Primary hypothyroidism caused by chronic autoiummune thyroiditis is rare before the age of three years. We report the case of a two-year-old girl who presented symptoms of hypothyroidism at eighteen months of age: poor growth and delayed language development. Treatment wih thyroxine resulted in a markedly normalization of growth, language and laboratory data. We emphasize the importance of getting to a diagnosis and treatment as early as possible, including study of thyroid function in young infants with delayed growth. Early treatment is necessary to prevent irreversible neurological and growth deficits.
