Abstract

Genetically modified foods result from the application of genetic engineering in food technology. Their commercialisation is generating much argument, particularly in European countries and the consumer is receiving contradictory messages. Certain groups speak of health and environmental risks, whereas others believe they will provide in large measure the solution to current problems of food production. The aim of this article is to provide the reader with unbiased information about genetically modified foods and mention all the possible risks and benefits associated with their commercialisation.
