Abstract

There has always been controversy over the importance of detecting asymptomatic bacteriuria, its influence on the state of health, whether it produces kidney disorder and specially over the need to establish treatment with antibiotics during a period of time, whether with therapeutic or prophylactic doses. Throughout the text it is shown that the course of real untreated asymtomatic bacteriuria is mild and its prognosis is good. Bacteriuria screening programmes in healthy children have also been put forward even though its usefulness has not, so far, been clearly proven.
